However, creating an account, formatting the book and uploading manuscripts can be a daunting task. "How to self-publish a book in 10 simple steps" offers advice and reasoning on what to put in all these small boxes. Knowing why and how makes the process a viable and rewarding experience.

The usefulness of this book lies in the fact that its author formulated it when loading a previous version of CreateSpace out of production into the new KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing). So, Beth Whittenbury has encountered and solved the same problems as when downloading your book. And his roadmap describes the process in an orderly manner from the decision. Do you want to become your publisher? There are advantages and disadvantages and you have the necessary information to make a rational choice.

The next step is to get the ISBN, which identifies not only your book, but also its format and publisher. This section also identifies the author, page size, format, and media, both an ebook and a paperback. The other classifications are the main category, the target audience and, if known, the date of publication. ISBNs are obtained through the myidentifiers.com website and prices range from $ 125 to $ 29.50 for a purchase of ten.

The next step is to register your book with the Library of Congress for a default control number (PCN), which helps libraries identify where your book has been booked. This section also identifies the country in which you work, your tax information, the bank's routing information for payment of royalties, and your social security number or EIN.

Once you have set up your KDP account, you can start uploading your script to the KDP system. The book provides instructions on the information placed in which boxes. For example, you may have other contributors such as an illustrator or a co-author. There are boxes for these. Other fields include language, book title, keywords, subject category, and publication rights. When you are satisfied with the manuscript, you have entered the KDP template. Consider converting this Word file into a PDF file. This is especially important if you have photos or illustrations or if it is a very large file.

Now we're in the cover section of the book. Here, Beth wonders whether to use a free cover created by KDP or pay a designer to create one. The selection of a photo from the KDP image gallery for graphic design by title, subtitle and author's name is discussed in detail. Information is also provided on the back cover, including the book description, the author's photo and the ISBN-based barcode for your book. The back layout is also covered and includes the title of the book and the author's name printed vertically.

The last section is entitled "Commissions and taxes related to the pocket". Here you will choose the territorial rights you hold, your main market, the price of your book and any extended distribution such as bookstores, libraries and online retailers. Beth suggests that when you choose a price, you're asking questions from other books in your category and not a price above average. Basically, the fees are calculated at sixty percent of the published price minus the printing costs.
